Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph the New York City Marathon for the second year in a row. Last year I shot a time lapse of the marathon route and then shot a 360º panorama on the day of the race. This year I tried a little something different.
I worked with my colleague Jon Huang on developing an idea I had to shoot pictures on the ground at the finish line. My idea was to capture the emotion on the faces of runners as they crossed the finish line. Tens of thousands of runners take on the marathon every year and for many when they round that last corner in Central Park and see the finish line they become overwhelmed with emotion. So I was able to negotiate an unbelievable spot on the ground right on the finish line. I parked myself there with a 400mm lens and shot as tight as I could for about 4 hours. And I was really excited about the way it turned out. The final package is called Faces at the Finish and you can see it here . A selection of the images can also be seen at my website.
